Did you know that N.C. Wyeth was born today in 1882? He was an artist and illustrator. N.C. Wyeth was taught to improve his art by gaining knowledge of the world. N.C. Wyeth’s travel and work experience gave his art incredible depth and detail. He painted murals and created illustrations for magazines, advertisements, calendars, and posters. N.C. Wyeth also illustrated classic novels such as Treasure Island, The Last of the Mohicans, and Robinson Crusoe. During his life he created more than 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books and has been called one of America’s greatest illustrators.

Many of N.C. Wyeth’s children also became artists, musicians, and inventors. He was the father of Andrew Wyeth and the grandfather of Jamie Wyeth.
N.C. Wyeth earned his first commission when he was about 20. He created an illustration for The Saturday Evening Post.
N.C. Wyeth studied at the Howard Pyle School of Art.
To gain more knowledge and understanding, N.C. Wyeth took extensive trips to the Western United States and worked as a cowboy and mail carrier. As he traveled, he made note of the landscapes he observed and the way people lived their lives. He also had hands on experience of how bodies moved while at work or performing certain movements.
N.C. Wyeth’s work appeared in magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Harper’s Monthly, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Scribner’s.
N.C. Wyeth also created images used in advertising and calendars. He was commissioned to create illustrations for companies such as Cream of Wheat, Coca Cola, General Electric, and Steinway & Sons. He also contributed or donated illustrations to the government or non-profit groups such as the American Red Cross.
The Brandywine River Museum of Art has galleries dedicated to the work of the Wyeth family of artists. It also features some of the studios of N.C. Wyeth.
