Did you know that in 1797 Andre-Jacques Garnerin made the first recorded parachute jump? He was one of the early balloonists and was the Official Aeronaut of France. His parachute was designed to work with the gondola (basket) of a hydrogen balloon. The parachute was made from canvas (a durable cloth) or silk and about 23 feet wide. During his test in Paris, France, he let the balloon rise to 3,200 feet before cutting the rope that connected the gondola and parachute to the balloon. It was a rough ride and landing, but Garnerin was able to walk away from the landing unhurt.
