Did you know that ‘Groucho’ Marx was born today in 1890? His real name was Julius Henry Marx; ‘Groucho’ was his stage name. His career spanned more than 70 years and he appeared on stage, film, television, and radio and he is listed as one of America’s greatest comedians. With his exaggerated postures, distinctive appearance which included painted-on mustache and eyebrows, glasses, and cigar, “Groucho” is one of the most recognizable characters in entertainment. Groucho Marx was also known for his quick wit, wordplay, and banter which he used both while performing and in his personal interactions with others.

Along with his brothers, Marx started his career in vaudeville. Of the 26 movies he starred in, 13 were produced with his brothers. Some of their movies include Animal Crackers, A Night at the Opera, and Monkey Business.
Julius Marx also hosted a quiz show called “You Bet Your Life”.
In 1972, Julius Marx was made a Commander in the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 1974, the Marx Brothers received an honorary Academy Award.
Julius Marx mentioned in interviews that because he was a man that had never received formal schooling, some of his proudest achievements were having his work selected for cultural preservation by the Library of Congress and having work published by the New Yorker Magazine under his own name.
