Did you know that Louis Lumière was born today in 1864? He was a French inventor and engineer. Louis Lumière invented processes to improve the process of developing photographs. Along with his brother, Auguste, he invented the cinematographe, a combination motion picture camera and projector. The Lumiere brothers produced motion pictures which featured scenes from daily life such as people at work or play, city streets, and the arrival of trains. The portable size of the cinematographe and hand-cranked operation made it easy to bring the device around the world to capture and show motion picture footage.

We hope that you continue to create new ways for people to see the world around them! Remember to think kind thoughts, use kind words, and do kind things. We Love You.

Bonus Facts:
When he was 17, Louis Lumière developed a new process to develop film using a dry plate. The process was so successful, that his family opened a new factory to produce these plates.

Auguste and Louis Lumiere introduced the “Autochrome” process in 1907, which improved the method for developing color photographs.

The cinematographe weighed about 20 pounds; 100 times lighter than the Kinetoscope.

The first public demonstration of the cinematographe was in Paris on December 28, 1895. It was immediately popular and used throughout Europe and North America within months. Unlike the Kinetoscope, the film could be projected for an audience to see instead of just one person at a time.

The Lumiere Brothers also produced the first documentaries and news reels.
