Did you know that in 1787, William Herschel discovered Titania and Oberon, the first two moons of Uranus? The moons of Uranus are named after characters created by William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope. Scientists have discovered 27 moons orbiting Uranus. The first five moons of Uranus were discovered between 1787 – 1851. The next moon was not discovered until 1948, the latest moon was discovered in 2016. The five largest moons are large enough to have planetary mass. If they orbited the Sun on their own, they would be considered dwarf planets!
