Did you know that E.T.A. Hoffman was born today in 1776? He was an author, music composer, and artist. Hoffmann drew caricatures, which are drawings that over-emphasize certain characteristics. Caricatures are used to draw attention to a topic, to mock or criticize, or for entertainment. Hoffmann’s written works influenced other writers and musicians. One of Hoffmann’s works is the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was the basis for Marius Petipa and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, The Nutcracker.

He was born Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, but later in life used the name Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, as a tribute to Mozart.

Hoffmann’s stories are also the basis for other operas, ballets, and musical suites such as Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann and Schumann’s Kreisleriana.

Hoffmann’s written works also inspired writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, Nikolai Gogol, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Franz Kafka, and Alfred Hitchcock.
