Did you know that E.T.A. Hoffman was born today in 1776? He was an author, music composer, and artist. Hoffmann drew caricatures, which are drawings that over-emphasize certain characteristics. Caricatures are used to draw attention to a topic, to mock or criticize, or for entertainment. Hoffmann’s written works influenced other writers and musicians. One of Hoffmann’s works is the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was the basis for Marius Petipa and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, The Nutcracker.
