Did you know that the National Geographic Society was founded today in 1888? The National Geographic Society supports and funds scientific research and exploration. It produces magazines, books, maps, websites, films, and television shows that focus on geography, archaeology, history, science, world culture, and environmental and historical conservation. It also organizes the annual National Geographic Bee.

In 1833, 33 explorers and scientists gathered in Washington DC to found the National Geographic Society, “a society for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge”. The first president of the society was Gardiner Greene. The second president was Alexander Graham Bell. The headquarters is still located in Washington DC.

The National Geographic Society’s board of trustees include educators, former government officials, and conservationists.

The society believes that science, exploration, and storytelling has the power to change the world and works to inspire and educate. It provides grants for educational organizations, scientific research, and exploration. The various media properties reach more than 280 million people each month.

The National Geographic Museum is located in Washington DC. Exhibits include photography from National Geographic Explorers and other exhibits focused on natural history, culture, and geography. The society also sponsors travelling exhibits. Past exhibits have featured King Tut and China’s Terracotta Warriors.

The National Geographic Society also sponsors the annual National Geographic Bee.
The first issue of National Geographic to use the trademarked yellow border was the February 1910 issue. The magazine is published in 40 different languages with about 60 million readers.
