Did you know that John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich was born today in 1943? Many think that the ‘sandwich’ is named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich. The legend is that in the 1700’s the 4th Earl of Sandwich used to direct his servants to bring him meat tucked between two pieces of bread. This became popular among his friends who started to order “the same as Sandwich!”. Captain James Cook also named the Sandwich Islands after the 4th Earl of Sandwich.
