Did you know that Wilhelm Carl Grimm was born today in 1786? He was the younger brother in the ‘Brothers Grimm’, storytellers and linguists – people who study language. They are best known for their collection of fairy tales, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, which include stories such as “Cinderella”, “The Frog Prince”, “Hansel and Gretel”, and “Snow White”. The brothers listened to and collected folk songs, folk stories, and legends from their friends and villagers and wrote them down. Many of these folktales have continued to be very popular and well-known.

Grimm’s Fairy Tales, was first titled Children’s and Household Tales. The first edition had 86 tales, the brothers revised and added tales to other editions until there were about 200 tales.

The Brothers Grimm also worked on a dictionary of the German language. It was not completed during their lifetime.

The Brothers Grimm also studied the relationship between similar words in related languages. The rules they created later became known as “Grimm’s Law”.
