Did you know that Pierre Gassendi was born today in 1592? He was a French mathematician, philosopher, scientist, and astronomer. Gassendi was the first person to see a planet travel across the Sun. The planet he observed was Mercury, as predicted by Kepler, another astronomer. He also studied parhelia, a type of halo around the sun caused by ice crystals, helped to calculate a way to determine longitude while on a ship by using the moon, and used a type of early camera to measure the diameter of the moon.
