Did you know that Michael Bond was born today in 1926? He is an English author of more than 85 books and the creator of characters such as Monsieur Pamplemousse and Olga da Polga. The character he is best known for creating is the beloved Paddington Bear. Paddington books have been translated into 40 different languages around the world and have inspired TV shows, music, and movies. In the 2014 movie “Paddington”, Michael Bond had a small acting part as the “Kindly Gentleman”.

As a child Michael Bond lived near a train station and developed a love for trains. Paddington Station, and inspiration for some of his books is large train station in London.
In 1997, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his work in children’s literature. In 2007 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Reading.
Michael Bond published his first story while serving in the British Army during World War II.
