Did you know that on September 13th and 14th, 1814 Francis Scott Key was trapped on board a British ship while they were firing rockets at Fort McHenry near Baltimore? Despite the intense fighting, at dawn on September 14th, Francis Scott Key was able to see the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry. His experience inspired him to write the poem Defense of Fort M’Henry, which eventually became known as The Star-Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States of America.
