Did you know that rocks formed from magma or lava are known as igneous rocks? The color and texture of igneous rocks depend on what the lava or magma is made of and how quickly it cools. Lava that has just erupted from deep inside the earth it is so hot it has a reddish glow. However, when it cools off and solidifies, igneous rocks can be black, grey, white, pink, yellow-brown, blue, or a mix of these colors. When lava or magma cools slowly, the rock formed has a coarse-grained appearance; it looks like it is made of lots of little pieces of rock, like granite. When lava or magma cools quickly, the rock formed may be glassy like obsidian or fine-grained like pumice.
