Did you know that Charles Herbert Best was born today in 1899? Charles Best was a medical scientist and helped Dr. Frederick Banting to discover insulin. He won the opportunity to work with Dr. Banting in a coin toss.
Insulin is a type of molecule produced in the pancreas. Insulin helps to control the amount of glucose (a kind of sugar) in your blood. Your body uses glucose as an energy source. However, too much glucose in your blood stream is bad for your body and can damage organs, nerves, and blood vessels. With the discovery of insulin and what it does, scientists were able to start to develop treatments for diseases such as diabetes.
