Languages change with time. New words are created as people experience new things, or new things are discovered. As people stop learning and speaking a language, the language may also become ‘extinct’. When the same language is spoken in different parts of the world, the meaning of words can change as well. For example, English is spoken in both America and the United Kingdom. In British English, ‘football’ actually refers to the game American English speakers call ‘soccer’, not the game played during the Super Bowl. ‘Chips’ are the same as ‘Fries’
