One of our friends’ children had a birthday, turned the big 8. Decided to get my bum in gear and do something nice for a change.

Felt notebook cover with pen-loop closures

I’ve had the idea for a while, just a simple felt cover for a composition notebook with pen-loops that double as a closure for the journal.  I hope they use it for writing; doesn’t matter what.  A traditional journal, doodles, stories… anything.  Never too early to catch the writing bug.

The cover was quite simple to make.  Here are the instructions for a standard composition notebook (about 9 3/4″ by 7 1/2″).

You’ll need:

  • Felt
    • Back Cover – 11 ”  x 16″
    • Flap (You’ll need 2 of these) – 11″ x 4″
  • Composition Notebook
  • Pen
  • Ribbon (2 pieces) – 1″ wide,  about 3″ long, depending on the diameter of the pen
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Instructions

  1. Cut out the pieces of felt.
  2. If you want to embellish the cover, I’d do it now before you pin and sew the pieces together.  It’s possible to embellish it afterwards… but it’s a bit more tedious.
  3. Pin the flaps to the back cover.  You’ll notice that there’s a fuzzy and smooth side to the felt.  Pin the smooth sides together so the ‘fuzzy’ sides will be on the outside of the cover.
  4. Pin the pen-loops in place.

Pinning the cover, flaps, and pen-loops in place

    1. Wrap the ribbon around the barrel of the pen to find out how big the loop should be.
    2. Find the middle of the short side of the book cover (this is the ‘y-axis’ or vertical axis for those of you that have a bit of a mathematical bent).
    3. On the left side of the cover, slip the pen loop between the pinned back cover and flap.  The bottom edge of the ribbon should line up with the middle of the cover.  Pin in place.
    4. On the right side of the cover, slip the pen loop between the pinned back cover and flap.  The top edge of the ribbon should line up with the middle of the cover.  Pin in place.
    5. Fold the cover in half (as it would appear when you actually put it on the notebook).  The pen-loops should appear to be ‘stacked’.  Slip the pen in the loops.  Adjust the loops as needed so they match well and the pen fits snugly in the loops.
  5. Stitch along all four edges, 1/4″ from the edge of the cover.

Slip the cover on a composition notebook and it’s ready to go!
